একটা পোকার ভোঁ ভোঁ আওয়াজ অনেকক্ষণ মাথার মধ্যে বাজছিল।

খুব সহজেই ওকে দেখেও না দেখার ভান করে চলে যেতে পারতাম আমি।হয়ত,সেটাই ও চেয়েছিল।

গরমের দিন সন্ধেবেলায় আশ্চর্য হাওয়াটার জন্য অথবা অন্য কোনও কারণে,জানি না কলোনির মোড়ের ওপর আমাদের দেখা হয়ে গেল। আমরা কথা বললাম তবে সেই কোনও কথাই বিশেষ গুরুত্বপূর্ণ ছিল না। মোটামুটি দশটা মিনিট কাটিয়ে ফেলা যায় এমন কিছু হাল্কা কথা আমাদের মধ্যে ভাসছিল। তবে কথা বলতে বলতে আমার চোখ বারবার সরে যাচ্ছিল ওর গলার দিকে,মাঝে মাঝে কথার মধ্যে মধ্যে মধ্যে ওর বুকের দিকে। আমি যথাসম্ভব নিজেকে সরিয়ে রাখতে চাইছিলাম। থেকে। তবে একটা চিন্তা কিছুতেই আমার মাথা থেকে সরে যাচ্ছিল না।ঠিক এগারো বছর আগে এই গলা,বুক আমার সম্পত্তি ছিল- এই শরীরটা আমি অনায়াসে ছুঁতে পারতাম, এমনকি খুব ঘনিষ্ঠ সময়ে সেই অধিকার নিয়ে কথা বলে একে অপরকে উত্তেজিত করতাম।

এগারো বছর পর প্রাক্তন প্রেমিকার সঙ্গে সংসার,পরিবার,দায়-দায়িত্ব নিয়ে অনর্থক কথা বলার ক্লান্তি আমাকে সেই মুহূর্তে উন্মাদ করে তুলছিল।আমি মন দিচ্ছিলাম না তবে আমার হয়ে কেউ যেন ওর সঙ্গে অনর্গল নিতান্ত মধ্যমেধার কথা বলে যাচ্ছে।

‘আমার হয়ে কেউ’ – বিষয়টা খুবই ভয়ানক যদিও।

তুমি কী করছো এখন?

আমাকে কী প্রশ্নটা করছে ও?নিজেকে একটু গুছিয়ে নিচ্ছি আমি।তবে কিছুতেই প্রশ্নটার মধ্যে নিজেকে ঢুকিয়ে নিতে পারছি না।আরও গভীরে ঢোকার চেষ্টা করছি প্রশ্নটার।আরও গভীরে গিয়ে প্রশ্নটা যেন আমার ভেতরে বারবার করে বেজে চলেছে।

কিছুক্ষণ পর চলে গেলো এবং ঠিক সেই মুহূর্তে গোটা কলোনির মোড়ের ভিড়ের মধ্যে আমি অসম্ভব একা অনুভব করলাম।

একা। নিঃসঙ্গ…

ডানদিকে বিরাট মূর্তিটার নীচে কিছু ছাট নকশাল বৃদ্ধ বসে বসে গোটা শহরটাকে দেখে।শহরটাকে দেখে নাকি মোড়ের মাথায় তাদের দেখার বস্তু চাকরি ফেরৎ মেয়েদের যৌবন? কিছু পত্রিকার সাংবাদিক তাদের সঙ্গে বসে যৌন ইয়ার্কি করে।তাদের কালো ছোপ ছোপ ধারালো দাঁত নিয়ে কুৎসিত হেসে ওঠে মাঝে মাঝে। নিজের উনিশ বছর বয়সের কথা মনে পরে।এই কলোনি মোড়ের ওপর দাঁড়িয়ে মনে হত-

আমি এই শহরটার রাজা হব একদিন।

তক্ষুনি একটা ভয়াবহ দুর্ঘটনা ঘটল।

একটা সাইকেল লড়িটাকে পাশ কাটিয়ে যেতে গিয়েই পড়লো চাকার তলায়। ব্যাস,সেখানেই সব শেষ।একেবারে মাথার ওপর দিয়ে চলে গেছে লড়িটা। মধ্যবয়সী কোনও লোক,বাজার করে ফিরছিল হয়ত।সমস্ত রাস্তা জুড়ে রক্তে মাখামাখি আনাজ তরকারি ছড়িয়ে রয়েছে।একটা জটলা হয়েছে ওখানে। সকলে দেখছে কীভাবে মানুষের রক্ত গড়িয়ে যায়।দেখছে ফেটে যাওয়া খুলি দেখতে ঠিক কেমন লাগে। কেউ কেউ উঠে পড়েছে চালকের আসনে। কলার ধরে টেনে নামাচ্ছে চালককে।

-‘শুয়োরের বাচ্চা,নাম,বাঞ্চোদ’

উত্তেজিত জনতার সবাই ‘বাঞ্চোদ’ নামক গালাগালির প্রকৃত অর্থ জানে না।এই সমস্ত কিছু গালাগালি তারা মুখস্থ করে রাখে।

কিছুই মনে হল না। রক্ত হয়ত কিছুটা মারিয়েই রাস্তাটা পার হয়ে গেলাম ঐ পারে। বন্ধ হয়ে যাওয়া ওষুধের দোকানের সামনে একটা সিগারেট ধরালাম। যদিও সিগারেট আমি খাইনা।সিগারেট খেলে মুখের ভেতর একটা তিতো স্বাদ লাগে।জীবনের সমস্ত মিস্টতা আমি আস্বাদন করতে চাই এবং নির্লজ্জ ভাবে বেঁচে থাকতে চাই বছরের পর বছর। তবু সিগারেট আমি ধরালাম।

ক্লাবের কাছে যে পুরনো রকটায় একসময় ছিল মস্তানদের আড্ডা তা এখন দখল করেছে কিছু বুদ্ধিজীবী লোক। মস্তানগুলো সব বুড়ো হয়ে হেজে গেছে। কতগুলো নিজেদের মধ্যে মারামারি করে মরেছে। বাকিগুলো মরেছে মধুমেহ ও হৃদয়জনিত রোগে। এই শহরে রঙিন জামা পড়া এবং মুখে চুরুট আটা মস্তানদের অভাব অনুভব করি আমি।

বুদ্ধিজীবীদের থেকেই আজকের বিশেষ খবরটি পেলাম।

আমাদের শহরে নাকি সেই বিখ্যাত বিদেশী কোম্পানিটি তাদের কারখানা খুলতে চলেছে যারা মানুষের দীর্ঘায়ুর জন্য এক প্রকার তেল আবিস্কার করে পৃথিবী কাঁপিয়ে দিয়েছে।তাদের দাবি তেলটির নিয়মিত ব্যবহারে নাকি মানুষের শরীরের আয়ু দু’শো বছর অবধি বেড়ে যাবে।

এই শহরে কারখানা।

জায়গা কোথায়?

প্রশ্ন যে আমার কেবলমাত্র এইটেই এমন না।আরও কতগুলো গুরুত্বপূর্ণ প্রশ্ন আছে।তার মধ্যে সবথেকে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ এই যে-

মানুষের শরীরের আয়ু নয় বেড়ে গেলো দু’শো বছর কিন্তু মানুষের আত্মার আয়ু?সেটি বাড়া নিয়ে কি কোনও প্রস্তাব দিয়েছেন সংস্থা?

কীরকম দাম হবে গো? জনসাধারণের সাধ্যের মধ্যে?

বুদ্ধিজীবীদের থেকে এই প্রশ্নের উত্তর পেলাম না।এই প্রশ্ন এবং তেল তৈরির কারখানা নিয়ে আমার বিশেষ আগ্রহ নেই যদিও।শুধুমাত্র ভেবে যাচ্ছি আমাদের এই ঘিঞ্জি শহরটায় এতবড় একটা কারখানা তৈরির জন্য জায়গা কীভাবে পাওয়া যাবে?

তাহলে কি ওরা শহরের পুরনো বাড়ি কিনে নেবে সস্তায়?

এমন হতেই পারে যে আমাদের এখানকার বড় কাছারি মাঠটা ওরা কিনে নিল।তবে এমন হওয়ার সম্ভাবনা খুবই কম।তাহলে বড় বড় রাজনৈতিক সমাবেশগুলো করবেই বা কোথায়?

যে জমিটা চিড়িয়াখানা করার জন্য সরকার বরাদ্দ করেছে সেই জায়গাটাও ওদের দিয়ে দিতে পারে সরকার।মানুষের এমন এক যুগান্তকারী আবিস্কারের জন্য তো সরকারের এগিয়ে আসা উচিৎ।

তবে ভোট দাতাদের আয়ু বেড়ে যাক,এটা হয়ত কোনও সরকারই তেমনভাবে চায়না।বেশি আয়ু মানে বেশি অভিজ্ঞতা।বেশি অভিজ্ঞতা মানে…

পুরনো গলিটায় এক টিউশন ফেরৎ মেয়ের পিছু নিলাম। পেছন থেকে দেখতে বেশ লাগছে।ঘাড়ের ওপরে কিশোরী চুলগুলো এসে পড়েছে।রোগা শরীরের তুলনায় পিঠের ব্যাগটি বেশিই বড়।সালোয়ারটা বোধহয় কিছু বছর পুরনো।নিশ্চিত,এখনও স্কুল পার করেনি।কিছুটা দূরত্ব রেখেই ওর পিছু নিয়েছি। একটি ত্রিশ বছরের যুবক একজন ষোলো সতেরো বছরের যুবতীর পিছু নিয়েছে- বিষয়টিকে ঠিক এভাবেই সহজভাবে নেওয়া যেতে পারে। কিন্তু পিছু নিয়েছি কেন?এর কোনও উত্তর আমার জানা নেই। হয়ত পিছু নেওয়া নয়, ওর পিছন পিছন হেঁটে যেতে আমার ভালো লাগছে।ভালো লাগছে ওর বয়স।

কী?কেন?কীভাবে? এসবের কোনও মানে হয় না।

আমি ওর পিঠ থেকে নিজের চোখ সরাচ্ছি না।কোনও অপরাধবোধ আমার হচ্ছে না।আমরা এগোতে এগোতে অনেকটা অন্ধকার পথে চলে এসেছি। ঠিক তক্ষুনি একটি ছেলে বিপরীত দিক থেকে এসে দাঁড়ালো মেয়েটির সামনে। একজন কিশোর ছেলে,সুন্দর,উজ্জ্বল। ওর প্রেমিক?

ওরা দাঁড়িয়ে রইলো।

আমার ভেতরটা গুলিয়ে উঠলো কেমন। তীব্র একটা কষ্ট গলার কাছে কেমন আটকে গেলো হঠাৎ। মাথা নিচু করে কি অসম্ভব অপরাধ নিয়ে আমি এগিয়ে গেলাম সামনের রাস্তায়।

সবকিছুর একটা অভ্যেস হয়ে যায়।

ছেলেটি কি মেয়েটিকে আজ একটা চুমু খাবে?

অন্ধকার গলির সুযোগ নিয়ে ওরা কি কিছুটা খুচরো যৌনতা করে নিতে পারবে?

ওরা কি এখনও জানে যে ভালোবাসা একটা বয়সের পর কি বিপজ্জনক ভাবে অলৌকিক মনে হয়?

বড় রাস্তা দিয়ে একটা মিছিল চলে গেল। মিছিলের বক্তব্য কিছুই বোঝা গেল না। কয়েকটা লোক চিৎকার করতে করতে চলে গেলো শুধু।পেছন পেছন এক গুচ্ছ গাড়ি নিয়ম মেনে চলেছে।একটা এ্যাম্বুলেন্স আটকে পড়েছে সেই যানজটে।

পেছনের কয়েকটা লোক ‘ছেড়ে দাও,ছেড়ে দাও’ বলে পথ করে দিচ্ছে।

আমার মনে হল অ্যাম্বুলেন্সে রোগী কেউ নেই।শুধুই ধাপ্পা দিয়ে তাড়াতাড়ি যাওয়ার জন্যই ওমন করে হুটার বাজিয়ে দিয়েছে ওরা।আরও ভালো করে দেখতে চাইলাম ভেতরটা।সত্যিই ভেতরে কেউ অসুস্থ নেই?সত্যিই নেই!

বাড়ি ফেরার পথে একটা সস্তার ক্যাফেতে গিয়ে কফি অর্ডার দিলাম।আমার পকেটে কিছু মাত্র টাকা অবশিষ্ট আছে।

কাউন্টারের মেয়েটিকে এক ঝলক দেখেই উত্তেজিত হয়েছি।একটু ঝুঁকে,হাসি মুখে বললাম- একটা কফি।সে আমার চমৎকার চেহারা দেখে হয়ত কিছুটা আকর্ষণ অনুভব করছে।মেয়েদের কীভাবে আকর্ষণ করতে হয় সেই পদ্ধতিটা এখন আমি অনায়াসে রপ্ত করতে পেরেছি ।ওর চোখে মুখে এক দুষ্টুমির হাসি।এই মুহূর্তে ক্যাফেতে কেউ নেই।জিজ্ঞেস করলাম

-‘এখানেই বাড়ি?’

-‘হ্যাঁ’

-কোথায়?

যে নামটি ও বলল অনেক স্মৃতি হাতরেও সেই জায়গাটির নাম মনে করতে পারলাম না।তাহলে কি আমি এই শহরটিকে ধীরে ধীরে ভুলে যাচ্ছি?বা এই শহর ধীরে ধীরে ভুলে যাচ্ছে আমাকে?

ওর ফোন নম্বরের এগারোটি সংখ্যা টুকে নিলাম ন্যাপকিনের ওপরে।পকেটে ঢুকিয়ে রাখলাম।আজকের মতো রাতটুকু কেটে যাবে।

বেরোনোর আগে একবার পেছন ফিরে ওকে জিজ্ঞেস করলাম-

-তুমি কি এখনও বামপন্থায় বিশ্বাস করো?

মেয়েটি কোনও উত্তর দিতে পারলো না।বুঝলাম,এই নিয়ে ওর কোনও মতামত নেই।

স্বস্তি পেলাম।

এগারোটি নম্বর একটা রাতের জন্য যথেষ্ট।হয়ত বা আরও একটা রাত।

জায়গাটির নাম মনে করতে পারলাম না বলে মনের ভেতর কেমন খচখচ করতে লাগলো।কিছুতেই স্মৃতি হাতরে জায়গাটি মনে করতে পারলাম না।অথচ,একদিন কত অনায়াসে আমি নাম শুনেই চিনে নিতে পারতাম জায়গাগুলোকে।

গেট ঠেলে ভেতরে ঢুকে গেলাম ভেতরে।চারিদিকে সারি সারি কবর এবং তাদের শাদা পাথরের স্তব্ধতা।কত নাম,তাদের জন্ম ও মৃত্যু তারিখ।কিছু কবর নতুন,কিছু খুব পুরনো।আরও ভেতরে ঢুকে গেলাম।এই দিকটায় গাছ,ঝোপঝাড় বেশি।মাঝারি আকারের কবর বেছে নিলাম বসার জন্য।কতদিন পর এই জায়গাটায় এসেছি।ছোটবেলায় মন খারাপ হলে লুকিয়ে থাকতাম এখানে। একবার বাবার সঙ্গে তুমুল ঝামেলার পর সারাদিন বসে ছিলাম এখানে।বাড়ির লোক খুঁজে খুঁজে পাগল হয়ে গেছিল।এখন কেউ খুঁজতে আসেনা আমাকে।

উনিশ বছর বয়সে ভেবেছিলাম এই শহরটার রাজা হব।

আজ এগারো বছর পর আমার পকেটে একটা ন্যাপকিন এবং এগারোটি নম্বর।যার নম্বর আমি তার নাম অবধি জানিনা।আমি জানিনা এই নম্বরের সবকটি ঠিক কিনা।হয়ত টেলিফোন করে দেখবো আমাকে নম্বরটি সে ভুল দিয়েছে।

অথবা এমন হতে পারে যে টেলিফোন বেজে গেলো অথচ কেউ তুললো না।

আমার এই পুরনো শহরটার ভেতর একটা মাঝারি আকারের কবরের ওপর বসে জীবনের কথা ভাবতে আমার ভালো লাগছিল।ধীরে ধীরে কমে আসছে কোলাহল।জোনাকিদের একটা ঝাঁক কোথা থেকে যেন বেরিয়ে এসে উড়ে বেড়াচ্ছে আমার চারিদিকে।ঠিক সেই মুহূর্তে আমি বানিয়ে তোলা কোনও আশাকেই বিশ্বাস করতে পারছিলাম না।আমি শুনতে পারছিলাম কোনও এক অদৃশ্য বেহালাবাদক আকাশে বাতাসে বাজিয়ে চলেছে তার সুর।আমি শুধু সেই সুরটুকু শুনতে পাচ্ছিলাম।

ঠিক সেই মুহূর্তে আমি ঈশ্বরকে বিশ্বাস করতে পারছিলাম না,কোনও স্থির সংসারি জীবনের সুখকে বিশ্বাস করতে পারছিলাম না।আমি বিশ্বাস করতে পারছিলাম না মানুষের আয়ু বাড়িয়ে তোলা কোনও কারখানা,কিশোরীর কানের পাশে উড়ন্ত চুল এমনকি একটা রাজনৈতিক মিছিলের ভেতর একটা অ্যাম্বুলেন্সের হুটারকে।

আমি শুধু বিশ্বাস করতে পারছি আমার পকেটের ভেতর একটা শাদা ন্যাপকিন।

তার ভেতরে লেখা টেলিফোনের এগারোটি নম্বর যা যে কোনও সময়েই মিথ্যে হয়ে যেতে পারে।
